CHAPTER 19

Jensen was going through a box of documents. There were two more just like it on the desk. Without further ado, Sienna walked to the desk, grabbing a folder of her own.

“There’s no need to go through those,” he told her. “I had a quick chat with my mother, and we plan on inviting these families.”

Jensen handed her a list of names. Sienna skimmed through it, recognizing the names.

Kelsey: Ibrahim, Olaf, Krista, Maria.

Samenfeld: Linos, Jessika, Ben.

Berti: Elisabet, Arlene.

Aghayan: Dalia.

“I’m not sure inviting the Bertis is a good idea,” Sienna said.

Jensen lifted his brow. “What makes you say so?”

“Elisabet and Arlene’s parents both worked for my father. I’m pretty sure they were killed at the compound when the Ryder Massacre took place.”

“The Ryder Massacre?”

Sienna shrugged. “It needed a name. No matter their life or their choices, they deserve to be remembered.”

Wordlessly, Jensen nodded.

“Beware of the old Aghayan widow. She might appear frail, but her mind is as cunning as it was fifty years ago.”

“It’s rumored that she poisoned all three of her husbands,” Jensen mused.

“It’s only rumored because she had the money to make it go away. Dalia is a venomous old bitch. I’d stay as far away from her as possible,” Sienna advised. “What’s the reasoning behind this guest list?”

Leaning further into the chair, Jensen scratched his chin. “If we make peace with the Bertis, it might show others that we’re not monsters. Aghayan’s widow is a clear example of keeping your enemies close. The Kelseys are a weak bunch, with only Ibrahim to keep them strong and relevant. Once the old bastard dies, his son will drive his family to the ground. The Samenfelds, on the other hand, they’re a family to watch for. They’re as mean and ambitious as they come. At least with Dalia you know that she has one foot in the grave. But the Samenfelds are young and driven.”

Thinking the same, Sienna nodded. “I would hate to be anywhere near the Samenfelds. Show them a piece of your back and you’ll find yourself with a knife sticking out of it.”

“Noted,” Jensen said, scribbling furiously on the paper in front of him. “What are your thoughts on the Kelseys?”

Sienna scratched her chin, her brow furrowing. “Maria is my age. We went to school together, but I don’t remember her well. I just know that she was always desperate for love. She was said to be saving herself for marriage. Her parents, Olaf and Krista, always preferred to stay in the background. As far as I know, they never did anything worth mentioning. Olaf’s father Ibrahim is a completely different story.”

“Go on,” Jensen said, encouraging her to continue.

“My father once warned me to never talk to him or even go near him.” Sienna shuddered at the memory. “He seemed very adamant about it. I don’t know what the old bastard’s into, but I can tell you that it must be horrible. I’d never seen my father talk that way about anyone. It was as if he feared Ibrahim.
